An unofficial study by NBC News showed that the incidence of paralysis in most children has been on the rise throughout the country.<br />
<br />
The condition, which is called a softened myeloma or AFM, appears to have been caused by a viral infection, but health officials have been unable to link the cases to any specific virus. Causes symptoms ranging from muscle weakness to total paralysis.<br />
<br />
Health officials in 26 states told NBC News that they were investigating or reporting 85 cases of FMM.<br />
<br />
It happens suddenly and can cause a variety of symptoms, including vertigo, inability to walk, trouble swallowing or difficulty moving the arm. There is no specific treatment but if children show symptoms, they need quick care - especially if they have trouble breathing, they may need a respirator.<br />
<br />
At the end of September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 38 cases in 16 states. The Centers for Disease Control did not state, but health officials in Colorado said they had 14 cases in 2018 and Minnesota officials confirmed six cases.<br />

State health officials in 24 other states told NBC News that they had suspected or confirmed cases, some of which were reported after the end of September. An informal number of interviews based on interviews with these officials shows 33 suspected cases and 52 cases of acute myelitis, for a total of 85 suspected and confirmed cases.<br />

"There are currently two possible cases reported in 2018 under investigation," Brittany Fowler, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Health, told NBC News.<br />
<br />
"A suspected case has been reported in an adult male," said Lynn Sotvin of the Michigan Public Health Service.<br />
<br />
A spokesman for the Center for Disease Control said the agency had not planned to issue updated figures this week.<br />
<br />
It takes time to confirm AFM status. Viruses can cause a range of neurological symptoms and AFM is one of the rare cases that can follow a viral infection. To confirm AFM confirmation, doctors must determine whether the spinal cord is affected.<br />
<br />
The CDC contains a list of tests to be run to confirm the situation.<br />
<br />
"All suspected cases are sent to the CDC for review by neurologists," said Lara Anton of the Texas Department of Health Services. Texas confirmed eight cases of AFM this year.<br />
<br />
"It takes about a month to review the situation and decide on AFM."<br />
<br />
There are few cases of this process at the moment and are not reflected in the number of official cases. All Texas cases except one are children. "<br />
<br />
Alabama is also investigating two possible cases. "We have not yet completed our investigations to make sure they are AFM, so we have not reached the Centers for Disease Control," said Sherry Davidson, an epidemiologist in Alabama. "It may take a month or two because there are a lot of documents to review and a committee of experts that needs to be reviewed."<br />

AFM can develop from a viral infection, although its exact cause is unknown. Symptoms include limb weakness, facial drooping and trouble swallowing or talking. Doctors stress the importance of recognizing the early signs of AFM and seeking care as soon as possible.<br />

AFM cases first spiked in the United States in August 2014. By the end of that year, 120 people had been diagnosed in 34 states.<br />
The increase coincided with a national outbreak of severe respiratory illness caused by enterovirus D68. From August 2014 through August 2018, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received information on 362 cases of<a href="https://healthfunyy.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> AFM</a> across the United States.<br />
The CDC says it's important to practice disease prevention steps: staying up to date on vaccines, washing hands and preventing mosquito bites.<br />

According to the Metro, Home Secretary Sajid Javid has sanctioned the 'rescheduling' of the currently illegal treatment and an announcement is expected within two weeks, paving the way for it to be prescribed almost immediately.<br />

It is believed that cannabis-derived medication could be given instead of a patient needing to try other treatments beforehand.<br />

The campaign to legalise cannabis for medical purposes has gone on for some time but the turning point was when the Home Office granted Charlotte Caldwell's 12-year-old son, Billy, a special dispensation and 'urgent' licence for the of use medicinal cannabis oil.<br />

Billy was the first in the UK to receive a consignment of the drug on the NHS to help him with his intractable epilepsy, which leaves him with suffering with up to 100 seizures a day. Charlotte says the medicinal cannabis virtually cured Billy's symptoms and improved his quality of life.<br />

But according to Charlotte, authorities told their family doctor to stop handing out the life-saving treatment - after which she flew to Canada, where the drug is legal, to stock up on the medicine before Billy's ran out.<br />

After the confiscation in the UK, Sajid Javid used 'an exceptional power' as Home Secretary to get a licence issued for the family, according to Sky News.<br />

Speaking outside hospital at the time, Charlotte said: "There can only be one conclusion here: that my beautiful sweet little boy, who has a life-threatening form of epilepsy and one seizure can kill him, he needs his medicine back."<br />

"In July the Home Secretary committed to swift action on behalf of those whose medical conditions could potentially be eased by cannabis-based products and we have announced that cannabis-based products for medicinal use will be available for specialist doctors to prescribe legally from the Autumn.<br />

"In the interim the expert panel will consider applications for these products. Any proposed course of treatment with cannabis-based medicine must be clinically led."<br />

Patients are being advised to use these treatments and wait for symptoms to improve on their own, before going to a GP.<br />

Most coughs are caused by viruses, which cannot be treated by antibiotics and will clear up on their own.<br />

Yet despite this, research has previously found that 48% of UK GP practices have prescribed antibiotics for a cough or bronchitis.<br />

Health authorities are warning people about the potential effects of catching the flu and urging them to get <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunization" target="_blank">immunised</a>.<br />
For those that do contract the flu and go on to develop sepsis, the consequences can be deadly.<br />
A shortage in the flu vaccine has been caused by unprecedented demand, and supplies were being reserved for those most at risk of becoming seriously ill.<br />
A 13-year-old boy who was healthy and active died after catching the flu.<br />
Thomas Snell's condition rapidly became worse after he caught a cold while on a rugby tour.<br />
He went to the doctor and was told to rest up and drink fluids - but he never became well again.<br />
Thomas's aunt, Yvette Clarke, told Nine News her nephew was battling to cope with the virus.<br />
'He was not settling. He couldn't sleep, he was really restless and in pain.<br />
'It was 24 to 48 hours that he was in that state - a deathly state.'<br />
Thomas was put on life support five hours later after contracting sepsis.<br />
<br />
His organs shut down as his body tried to fight the bacterial infection, and 18 days later he died.<br />
<br />
'There was nothing they could do to save him. If he had have survived he would have been a quad amputee.'<br />
<br />
About 18,000 people in Australia are <a href="https://healthfunyy.blogspot.com/">diagnosed</a> with sepsis each year and 5000 of those die as a result - more than car crash and breast and prostate cancer deaths combined.<br />
Damian Jones's 18-year-old daughter Madeline died from sepsis in 2017.<br />

He said she was put on life support after catching the flu before developing sepsis.<br />
<br />
'Just asking the question - could this be sepsis? I think is very important and people shouldn't be afraid to ask that question,' Mr Jones said.<br />
<br />
Dr Dilip Dhupelia, Queensland president of the Australian Medical Association, said the flu should not be underestimated.<br />
<br />

Sepsis, also known as blood poisoning, occurs when the body reacts to an infection by attacking its own organs and tissues.<br />

Sepsis has similar symptoms to flu, gastroenteritis and a chest infection.<br />
